You can deactivate animations on Mouse Pointer and enhance precision. And you can speed up your typing by changing keyboard settings. Follow the steps. 

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar (Only if you use Windows XP)

  3. Double Click on the ‘Mouse’ in the Control Panel

  4. Select Pointers Tab

  5. Select [None] in ‘Scheme’

  6. Select ‘Pointer Option’ Tab (In Windows XP) or ‘Motion’ Tab (In Windows 9X)

  7. Uncheck ‘Display/Show pointer trails’ check box (Only if checked)

  8. Click OK

  9. Double Click on the ‘Keyboard’ in the Control Panel

 10. Set ‘Repeat delay’ and ‘Repeat rate’ to maximum

 11. Click OK

            If you use many fonts, it helps to slow down your computer. If you never use some of these fonts, you can remove that fonts and speed up your computer. Don’t remove standard fonts that are given with Windows. Let’s see the steps.

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar (Only if you use Windows XP)

  3. Double Click on the ‘Fonts’

  4. Select fonts that you want to remove.

  5. Click File and Select Delete from the file menu

  6. Click Yes to remove fonts

            When the RAM (Physical Memory) is insufficient, Windows use the Swap File (Virtual Memory) to increase system performance. Windows change the size of the Swap File many times according to the RAM status. So that, your computer takes time for that changing. If you enlarge the size of the Swap File and set permanent size for the Swap File, you can get real speed. You must be careful in this method. Please use 2 times the size of the RAM as minimum size and use 4 times the size of the RAM as maximum size. Make sure you have extra space more than maximum size (4xRAM+) in your hard disk. Follow these steps correctly.

    In Windows XP

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar

  3. Double Click on the ‘System’ and select Advanced Tab

  4. Click on the Settings button under the Performance

  5. Select Advanced Tab and click Change

  6. Select a fast hard disk of your computer

  7. Select custom size option

  8. Enter minimum size (2xRAM) in a ‘Initial size’ box

  9. Enter maximum size (5xRAM+) in a ‘Maximum size’ box

 10. Click OK on all dialog boxes and restart your computer

    In Windows 9X

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Double Click on the ‘System’ and select Performance Tab

  3. Click ‘Virtual Memory…’

  4. Select ‘Let me specify my own virtual memory settings.’ Option

  5. Select a fast hard disk of your computer

  6. Enter minimum size (2xRAM) in a ‘Minimum’ box

  7. Enter maximum size (4xRAM) in a ‘Maximum’ box

  8. Click OK on all dialog box and restart your computer

            You can speed up your CD Drive, DVD Drive or Hard Drive by activating DMA. But some Drives are not supported for DMA and you should update BIOS and Chipset Drivers from their web sites to get DMA support. Some softwares and software installers aren’t working with DMA. So that, we must think twice before activate DMA. Windows XP and Windows 9X use deferent methods activate DMA.

    In Windows XP

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar

  3. Double Click on the ‘System’

  4. Select Hardware Tab and Click Device Manager

  5. Click on the Plus(+) sign near the ‘IDE Controllers’

  6. Double Click ‘Primary IDE Channel’ and Select Advanced Settings Tab

  7. Set Device 0 and Device 1 Transfer Modes to ‘DMA if available’

  8. Click OK

  9. Double Click ‘Secondary IDE Channel’ and Select Advanced Settings Tab

 10. Set Device 0 and Device 1 Transfer Modes to ‘DMA if available’

 11. Click OK

 12. Close Device Manager Window

    In Windows 9X

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Double Click on the ‘System’

  4. Select Hardware Tab and Click Device Manager

  5. Click on the Plus(+) sign near the CD/DVD Drives

  6. Double Click on a CD/DVD Drive and Select Settings

  7. Check DMA check box under the Options

  8. Click OK (Repeat Steps 6 to Step 8 on your all CD/DVD Drives)

  9. Click on the Plus(+) sign near the ‘Disk Drives’

 10. Double Click on a Hard Drive and Select Settings

 11. Check DMA check box under the Options

 12. Click OK (Repeat Steps 10 to Step 12 on your all Hard Drives)

 13. Close Device Manager Window

            This method for the advanced user. If think you can’t do that correctly, skip this. You can decrease boot time by changing BIOS settings. It means the computer skip some steps of booting. Please don’t change any other settings except settings that we mention. These are the steps to do that work. But read first.

  1. Turn on your computer.

  2. Press the button that is viewing on the screen. (That can be DEL, F1, F2 and F10)

  3. Select ‘Use Optimize Settings’ or like that using the arrow keys and press enter

  4. Select ‘Advanced Settings’ in the BIOS menu, after complete Step 3

  5. Activate ‘Quick Power On Self Test’ in the advanced settings menu

  6. Deactivate ‘Boot Up Floppy Seek’ in the advanced settings menu

  7. Choose ‘Hard Disk’ or ‘C:’ as the ‘First Boot Drive’ in the advanced settings menu

  8. Go back to BIOS main menu by pressing ESC button

  9. Select ‘Save These Settings’ or like that and press enter

 10. Wait until restart your computer automatically

            If you installed many softwares, some of those softwares could be placed as a startup program. If you think that you don’t want to start those softwares with Windows, you can stop those softwares. You should remove the programs carefully. Don’t remove Virus Guards and programs that Windows want. If you not sure about a program, don’t remove it. Read first and then follow these steps.

  1. Click Start and Select Run in the Start Menu

  2. Type “msconfig” in the Dialog Box

  3. Click OK to open System Configuration Utility

  4. Select the Startup Tab

  5. Uncheck unwanted programs

  6. Click OK

  7. If you want that programs again recheck that programs after Step 4

            NTFS is more secure and faster than FAT32. You can convert your FAT32 hard disk to NTFS in Windows XP. You can increase the computer performance by deactivating indexing service. These are the step to do that work.

  1. Open Run Dialog (Start>Run)

  2. Type “convert [drive_letter:] /fs:ntfs”

  3. Click OK to convert (Convert all FAT32 partitions using this method)

  4. Right Click on a NTFS partition

  5. Select Properties

  6. Uncheck ‘Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching’

  7. Click OK

  8. Select ‘Apply changes to partition:\, subfolders and files’ and Click OK

  9. Select ‘Ignore All’ on a error (Repeat Steps 4 to Step 9 on your all NTFS partitions)

            Most of the Computer Companies are release latest updates for their products. You can increase the computer performance by updating. If you don’t know details about hardware in your computer, you should use hardware recognizing program. Then you can download updates from their manufactures’ web sites and install them. And you can get update information for the software from their help files or their web sites. You must update Windows and your Virus Guard regularly. And we don’t recommend update BIOS or Chipset drivers your self. Call your hardware technician, if you want to update BIOS or Chipset that can be called as Computer Killer.

            Why don’t you delete unwanted files and unwanted software? Computers also like to the freedom. If they have more free space, they will work fast. So that, you can get more and more space by doing these steps. You should cleanup your all hard disks one by one.

  1. Double Click and open my computer.

  2. Right Click on a hard disk and select Properties

  3. Click ‘Disk Cleanup…’ in the General Tab

  4. Check unwanted files and Click OK

  5. Select the Tools Tab

  6. Run Scan Disk and Disk Defragment from there (Skip this, if you can’t wait)

  7. Click OK (Repeat Steps 1 to Step 7 on your all hard disks)

  8. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  9. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar (Only if you use Windows XP)

 10. Double Click on the ‘Add/Remove Programs’

 11. Remove unwanted software from there

 12. Click OK

            If you don’t need, you can stop sounds that you hear in special occasions in Windows like in error or while shutting down the computer. To do that, follow these steps.

  1. Open Control Panel (Start>Settings>Control Panel)

  2. Click Switch to Classic View in Left Side Bar (Only if you use Windows XP)

  3. Double Click on the icon named Sounds or like that

  4. Select ‘No Sound’ in ‘Scheme’ in the Sound Tab

  6. Click OK
